Primed and Ready

I’ve always thought makeup primers were a good idea, but had trouble finding one I liked, mostly because they always seem to have lots of silicone which feels heavy on the skin.

I recently came across the new SMASHBOX Photo Finish Light Primer. This primer boasts a water-base, light diffusers, vitamin C, and collagen promoting peptides.

It feels great on the skin; light, breathable, and smooth. It’s definitely my new favorite product!

Easy to apply: Use between moisturizer and foundation to elongate and maximize the look of your makeup.

I always believed that taking care of your skin happened from the inside-out since there is a well established link between diet and skin health. BORBA Skin Balance Waters are the newest breakthrough in skin care, beautifying our skin from the inside out. Each water contains powerful antioxidants and skin nourishing ingredients and minerals, which help improve the overall health of the skin.

ZO Skin Health by Dr. Obagi

By, Sharon Curtis

Dr. Zein Obagi has been Beverly Hills premier dermatologist for over 20 years. He is truly a skincare pioneer. His education, success, and experience led him to create ZO Skin Health. ‘ZO’ is an aggressive skincare line that combats aging with very powerful ingredients such as stabalized retinol and advanced peptides.

Dr. Obagi’s philosophy is simply this, “To win the battle on aging, give it your best shot.” His methods are quite aggressive, but work wonders if you are truly commited.

Some results you can expect from ZO Skin Health are:

*Re-energized skin with constantly stimulated cellular function and repair

*Diminished look of fine lines and wrinkles

*Improved tone and texture

*Incresed skin firmness and elasticity

*Calmed, less irritated skin by way of anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant agents

My absolute favorite product is the Oclipse Sunscreen + Primer SPF 30. It’s truly a remarkable product. It does so much more than your typical sunscreen. It heavily protects against UVA/UVB sun damage, stimulates collagen, hydrates and moisturizes, and smoothes skin to a silk-like state thus making for a flawless makeup application. LOVE IT!!!

I encourage you to check out the ZO Skin Health website to learn more about the talented, Dr. Obagi and his fantastic products. ‘ZO’ products are also sold at Nordstrom.com and select Nordstrom stores and Fred Segal in Santa Monica, California.

Clarins Cure For Cellulite?

By, Sharon Curtis

I got a tip from a fellow beauty editor about a ‘miracle’ potion for cellulite. Like most of us I was a bit skeptical. So like any good, ’cosmetically obsessed’ person, I decided to launch a full-scale investigation.

As you must know by now, Clarins is a marvelous line. It’s been around since 1954 and has a strong commitment to excellence. Most of their products are plant based and contain the highest quality ingredients. I had a feeling I was going to like this treatment.

The two products recommended for my cellulite problem were Total Body Lift and Body Shaping Supplement.

Total Body Lift- is a lightweight body cream that is designed to fight cellulite. It promises help with a sleeker, streamlined silhouette. Most people notice a change in skin tone almost immediately.

Body Shaping Supplement- is meant to be combined with your body care product to reduce the appearence of cellulite and sponginess. It has the ability to “stimulate fat removal and refine body contours by increasing blood circulation and lymphatic drainage”

Well as instructed , I blended the two together by emptying the entire Body Shaping Supplement vial into the Total Body Lift and started using my ‘potion’ day and night, religiously.

My report: WOW! I’m a believer. This stuff is fantastic. It really helps. The tone in my legs has changed noticeably and the cellulite is definately reduced. I’ve only been using it for 3 weeks and I consider this improvement dramatic.

For anyone out there who suffers from cellulite and sponginess (you know who you are), I definately recommend this duo.

‘Face Fabric’ by Giorgio Armani

By, Sharon Curtis

I’ve absolutely fallen in love with this fantastic foundation from Armani. It’s called Face Fabric and is characterized by Armani as a “Second Skin Makeup”. I would say this formulation is similar to a tinted-moisturizer with better coverage.

Face Fabric is an invisible makeup that features the all important SPF as well as 3D Micro-fil technology.

The addition of Micro-fil in this foundation brings a lightness and fluid texture to the makeup, allowing easy blending and layering to enhance the skins natural glow. The result is flawless and radiant skin.

In the studio with Robert Randolph and Ben Harper

I know this doesn’t qualify as a beauty category but I just thought I had some bragging rights! Robert Randolph is a long time east coast friend of mine and he’s been working on a new album here in Los Angeles. I decided to pop over to the studio the other night and witness some amazing music in the making between Robert and Ben Harper. The festivities lasted till about 5am when Robert asked me if I wouldn’t mind singing with them on the track. I figured, hey I’ve been here this long why not? It was a blast and now I get to say I sang with Robert Randolph and Ben Harper.

If you’re into Blues, Gospel mixed with a bit of country, I urge you to check out Robert Randolph and the Family Band on itunes!

The Art of Exfoliation

What is it? Why do we do it? Is it important? Can you overdue it?

Exfoliation is the purposeful removal of the oldest skin cells that lie on the outermost surface of the skin.

There are two different ways to exfoliate: manual & chemical

Manual Exfoliation

Manual exfoliation consists of an abrasive applied to the skin, massaged in, then removed with water. Examples of manual exfoliants are sugar, coffee grounds, and jojoba beads. This is the most common type of exfoliant you will see from most cosmetics lines.

Microdermabrasion is another manual exfoliation process that is very popular at spas, but is much costlier than your typical at-home treatments. This type of exfoliation is done by an instrument that sprays micro-crystals onto the skin at a very high frequency. This process leaves the skin deeply exfoliated.

Chemical Exfoliation

Chemical exfoliation (sounds scary, but it is not) consists of the use of an enzyme, alphahydroxy acid or betahydroxy acid. These types of acids work by loosening the outermost layer of the skin and debris. The most common chemical exfoliants are sold by cosmetics lines in the form of a peel or retexturizer.

A chemical peel is the strongest form of exfoliation and can be obtained in a spa or doctor’s office depending on the severity of the peel. Chemical peels can range from a lunchtime treatment to a procedure using a local anesthetic and a week off from work.

Exfoliation is an extremely important part of any good skincare regimen. It’s important to exfoliate both your face and body. The biggest benefit of exfoliation is that the skin looks fresher and all the expensive beauty & body products you buy will penetrate the skin and work much better!

If you’re not sure what exfoliation process is best for you, just test out different products to see what works best. I’m a big fan of chemical exfoliants because I think they are more effective and safer for the skin.

You can overdue exfoliation. This is definitely not a case of more is better. Depending on the strength of the exfoliant procedure you opt for, you will want to follow the package or technician’s directions. Over-exfoliation can lead to broken capillaries, dryness, irritation and abrasions. So be careful and have fun!
