Everything you need to know about pride...

What is Pride?

What is Pride?

Historically, there has always been a huge stigma attached to identifying as LGBTQIA+. Pride is the celebration of equality and the increased visibility of the LGBTQIA+ social group.

What is Pride month?

Pride month begins in June and is designed to spread awareness and uplift the voice of the LGBTQIA+ people. Additionally, it is used as an opportunity to celebrate those who have fought for LGBTQIA+ rights and remember those who have lost their lives to HIV or AIDS. Communities all throughout the world come together to host and join parades, performances and protests.

What is the Pride Flag?

The iconic rainbow flag is a symbol of LGBTQIA+ Pride. Each of the 6 colours represent something different:

Red - Life

Orange - Healing

Yellow - Sunshine

Green - Nature

Blue - Serenity

Purple - Spirit

In 2018, graphic designer, Daniel Quasar, updated the traditional 6-coloured pride flag with 5 new colours to deepen the meaning of it. Pink, Blue and White stripes were added to represent that trans community, while Black and Brown stripes were added to represent queer people of colour, those living with AIDS & HIV and to pay tribute to those whose lives have been lost to it.

Why Do We Celebrate in June?

In June 1969, a popular gay bar called The Stonewall Inn, New York was raided by police officers. This wasn’t unusual, however on this occasion, the people within the bar fought back. This was known as the Stonewall Riots which went on for days. The first Pride parade happened one year after this incident in 1970, meaning this June marks the 51st anniversary of Pride!

How to celebrate:

Due to Covid-19, most pride events last year were cancelled. However, this year, many events are going ahead! The theme for 2021 is “The Fight Continues” and certain locations across the UK will be hosting Pride protests, so go get your march on!

Another fantastic way to show your support is by donating to a LQBTQIA+ foundation, like:
