glossary & faqs

    • Some of our plastic is created from sugarcane, rather than fossil fuels, which makes it much more sustainable. New sources of materials should always be carefully sourced to avoid creating a new problem whilst addressing another. Our sugarcane is responsibly sourced from arable land in Brazil, well away from the rainforests. What’s more, for every kg of sugarcane bioplastic produced, 3.09 kgs of carbon dioxide is removed from the air - it is carbon negative! Even better news is that bioplastic has the same ability to be recycled as “normal” plastics.
    • Our palettes are manufactured from wood pulp which is crushed down to have the hand feel of plastic. This means that the material can serve as a plastic substitute, it looks like plastic, feels like plastic but is not plastic. The material can be biodegradable or compostable after a period of time. It is much more sustainable than plastic as it breaks down after use in a natural quick and easy way meaning less plastic waste on our Earth!
    • PCR stands for Post Consumer Regrind. When you recycle your plastic products they are ground down into pellets and used again to make new packaging. This removes waste from landfill, uses less energy and uses fewer of the earth’s resources. Sometimes this can also be mixed with new plastic. The higher the PCR content, the more chance there is that packaging can be cloudy looking or slightly grey. We’ve embraced this in Planet Revoltiuon, building it into our design, we feel it’s worth it. PCR plastic can be recycled, but not over and over again forever, so it is important that some new plastic is also introduced into products to keep the cycle going.
    • With Planet Revolution we are offering an affordable choice to our customers who want clean formulas and conscious packaging. We are using Planet Revolution as a testbed to fast-track new findings and use these learnings throughout our business. By working this way, we have already made significant changes to our other brands. One of our first major initiatives was reducing plastic consumption by over 50 tonnes in our 2020 Gift collection. That's equal to roughly 3 million plastic water bottles. In early 2021 we switched our Fixing Spray bottles - over one million of them - to 100% recycled plastic.
    • Our aim is to bring products to the market first, fast & affordably. We launch products regularly but we control our buy quantities so that our supply meets our demand as best we can to combat waste. We are constantly evolving, so being fast and agile allows us to change and grow for the better at a faster pace.
    • It’s important to consider the end to end carbon footprint of different packaging and product options. Every material has its positives and negatives. Glass for example, is widely recycled and can be recycled over and over but it uses a lot of energy to manufacture, transport and recycle. Also, most glass in packaging is brand new and not recycled. In comparison, plastic uses less energy to produce, transport and recycle, but can’t be recycled forever. It is also readily available to use in a recycled form in packaging. With all our products we review the options and choose the packaging we feel is best on balance.
    • Yes, we're using FSC certified cartons wherever possible and label this clearly on our packaging. FSC stands for 'Forest Stewardship Council' - when you see this logo, you can be confident that buying it will ensure the responsible management of the world's forests.
    • We use cleanflake adhesive on all our PET bottles. Cleanflake allows for the clean separation of label flakes from a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) container, which would otherwise contaminate the plastic.
    • We are exploring lots of options to make our metallic packaging more sustainable and have already moved some to recyclable options.
    • All our boxes are made from FSC certified materials.and use a sustainable alternative to plastic bubble wrap which is 100% compostable in 21 days. The air pillows we use for larger orders contain a minimum of 50% recycled material and are 100% recyclable. Paper tape is used to secure boxes. We use water based odour free ink on all packaging elements, produced from natural materials, for total recyclability and reduced environmental impact.
    • We formulate our SPF products without the use of Octinoxate and Oxybenzone.
    • All rinse-off products supplied to Revolution are required to be free from microplastics and microbeads.
    • Wherever possible, we avoid using palm oil and its derivatives. When it is technically unavoidable to use these materials, the supplier must ensure that the palm oil used in products is sustainably sourced.
    • Wherever possible, we avoid using natural mica. When it is technically not possible to use synthetic mica, the supplier must ensure that the mica used has been obtained from an ethical source.
    • Suppliers to Revolution Beauty must be committed to achieving the highest standard of environmental management and control through the development and long-term maintenance of an Environmental Management System in line with the requirements and objectives of ISO 14001:2015.
    • Everything we produce is cruelty-free and always has been. We're certificated to PETA and never allow animal testing at any stage of development for both ingredients and final products.
    • Our mission is to become 100% vegan for all Revolution Skincare in 2021. We are working to increase the amount of vegan products we have across all our brands going forward.
    • Synthetic ingredients are a much more reliable source as they are not reliant on harvests and a consistent purity, whereas naturals are not. By using synthetics, you are also not competing with land needed to grow food, and so can be considered more sustainable. With all our products we review the options and choose the ingredients we feel are best on balance.
    • Preservatives keep our products free from bacteria, moulds and fungi that would otherwise spoil the product and cause harm.
    • We try and offer a mix of options - fragrance free, natural fragrance and synthetic fragrance. Some ingredients have odours which some people may find unpleasant, so we may add a fragrance to mask this. For some products, fragrance is a part of the sensory experience.
    • Upcycled ingredients are ingredients made from unused residual ‘waste’ from another process. For example, when fruits are juiced, the residual pulp and seeds can be discarded, or useful extracts made from them.
    • Before going on sale, all our products are assessed for safety against regulations in EU, UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Middle East and most major South American countries.
All our factories comply with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). This is a legal requirement.
    • Around 60% of our products are made in China, 25% in Taiwan, 15% in UK, Italy, France & Germany.
    • All the content we create at Revolution follows our Zero Retouch Revolution policy. We know all too well that what we push out into the world has consequences, and we take our responsibility in normalising beauty standards incredibly seriously. We love to share our fans' looks on our socials and we won't share a look which appears as if it has been retouched #zeroretouchrevolution
    • Revolution has championed diversity and inclusion since the day it was born. With our purpose to develop cosmetics and skincare for every skin tone and for every budget, we have achieved many firsts in the beauty industry, from often launching the largest shade ranges in the market to the world's first makeup collab with a male influencer in Carmi. Working with a diverse talent pool and making sure our product ranges are widely available should be a given but there are areas we could do much better in. We are committed to a programme of constant focus and evaluation from around the business. Following the BLM movement in 2020, we took steps to ensure accountability and improve areas where we were lacking in diversity. We launched our Power the Revolution team collective to fast track this diversity across the business. Power the Revolution’s first achievement was to launch our annual Revolution Academy with the aim of breaking down barriers to entering the beauty industry, offering the opportunity of employment (12 month paid position) to a diverse and under-represented group. In the first cohort, we recruited from ethnic minority groups and those with a registered disability. Four team members joined Revolution Beauty early in 2021.
    • Here are some of the charities that we have donated money to since 2018; Marie Curie, MIND, Minnesota Freedom Fund, Centrepoint, True Colors United, SEED. We regularly donate product to charities and care givers.
