STRAIGHT UP – TYPE 1 HAIR
Type 1 hair has little to no curls, with only the ends of the hair holding a slight curl or bend.

RIDING THE WAVES: TYPE 2 HAIR
Type 2 hair has a natural S-shaped bend to the hair, with tousled waves forming when the hair dries naturally. 2A curls consist of loose waves, while 2B is typically straighter at the roots, with more defined waves towards the mid-lengths and ends. 2C waves are defined from roots to ends, and form thicker waves than 2A and B, typically.

SPRING FLING: TYPE 3 HAIR
Type 3 hair has naturally shaped coils that form without styling or manipulation – they are springy and have more root volume overall than type 2 hair. 3A are looser curls and spirals with a defined S-shape, while 3B can vary from ringlets to dense corkscrews. 3C forms dense, tightly packed corkscrews that are the most voluminous of this hair type, but also tend to have the most shrinkage, too.

KEEP YOUR COIL: TYPE 4 HAIR
Type 4 hair has the tightest curl pattern and retains its shape when wet (as opposed to type 3 which may look wavy or even straight when wet). 4A have defined, springy coils that tend to be fine, but have a defined S-shape. 4B curls bend in sharp Z-shaped angles, and 4C curls are as densely packed as 4B. However, the delicate and tightly coiled strands experience less definition and more shrinkage.
