The SPF Lowdown

What, when, why, and myth busting

SPF is a tricky topic, from the different types of UV filters (don’t worry, I’ll explain in a minute) to a host of misinformation about using SPF, it’s no wonder a lot of us are getting it wrong. I didn’t even realise until a few years ago that SPF really counted as traditional ‘skincare’, but now that I’m more clued up I’ve realised how epically wrong I was – SPF is the most important part of your skincare routine.

We’ve been waiting to release SPF until we got it right, as in true ‘better skincare, better makeup’ fashion we wanted to make sure it seamlessly integrates into your full beauty routine. That’s why we’ve released SPF15 and SPF30 in two varieties, one for normal to dry skin (formulated with Cocoa and Shea Butters), and one for normal to oily skin (enhanced with Niacinamide).

So why is SPF so important?

Sun damage is the primary cause of extrinsic and premature skin aging and is irreversible. Once the damage is done, it’s done. Even worse, serious damage and prolonged unprotected exposure to UV rays can also lead to skin cancer. A lot of people associate SPF with rubbing a thick, vaguely unpleasant cream into their legs whilst on a beach but using an SPF on your face daily (or any other exposed areas of skin) is just as important.

“I live in *insert cold, grey country here* so I don’t need daily SPF”

No, no, no! UV rays exist in hot and cold weather and can penetrate clouds, so even in winter or colder countries it’s important to stay protected. If you don’t like using a high SPF daily, you can use the UV index on your weather app on your phone to decide whether to opt for SPF15 or SPF30 in the morning.

“But my foundation has SPF in…”

That’s great! Any added protection is fab, however, most likely it’s not enough to protect you alone. Unless you’re smothering yourself in a very thick, consistent layer over your face and neck, the SPF protection won’t be enough alone. Instead boost your protection with one of our moisturising SPF creams before applying foundation.

“I have a deeper skin tone, so I don’t need SPF, and besides it leaves a white cast on my skin.”

Actually, all skin tones (and ages) should wear SPF every day. The skin’s melanin only has an SPF of around 8, not enough to protect you. Our SPF Moisture Creams contain chemical UV filters, this means they absorb UV rays to protect, unlike physical UV filters which reflect it and are known to cause a white cast. Diversity is important to us and we wanted everyone to be able to love our SPF.

“I sit inside my office all day, why would I bother.”

Does your office have windows? If yes, then you need SPF as UV light can penetrate through windows.

“Okay, you’ve convinced me. Where can I stock up?”
