A

Acetyl Glucosamine

Acetyl Glucosamine is a primary constituent of various polysaccharides and hyaluronic acid in cells. It helps to promote the synthesis of hyaluronic acid in the skin, improving skin moisture and skin health. It also has skin brightening properties and can help skin to look smooth and glowy.

Allantoin

A widely used and exceptional skin-soothing agent, that helps to reduce skin irritation, promotes the recovery of skin and aids in improving skin moisturisation.

Aloe Vera Extract

Aloe is known to have skin-soothing, antioxidant and hydrating properties due to its polysaccharide and sterol content. It is widely used and helps to give a fresh feeling to the skin. 

Alpha-arbutin

One of the most widely used skin brighteners, this tyrosinase inhibitor is rapidly absorbed into the skin and well-tolerated. It fades dark spots and hy­perpigmentation for a brighter skin appearance.

Argan Oil

Extremely rich in vitamin E, this oil has been used by women in Northern Africa to maintain and care for their hair and skin for centuries. It is rich in poly-unsaturated acids, linoleic acid and phytosterols helping to keep skin soft, nourished and protected. 

Azelaic Acid

Azelaic acid is non-irritating to the skin and helps to even skin tone and residual scarring or hyperpigmentation issues, as well as helping to prevent the formation of blemishes.

Avocado Oil

A rich, heavier-feeling oil containing vitamin A, D and high levels of oleic acid. It is deeply nourishing for the hair and skin and can penetrate the skin effectively despite being a richer oil, so doesn't feel heavy on the skin.

Apricot Kernel Oil

An excellent general purpose emollient, odourless and pale in colour. It is easily absorbed by the skin, and is rich in vitamins A and E, helping nourish and soften the skin.

Vitamin A and its derivatives

Has many functional properties including increasing cell proliferation and turnover, reducing the appearance of dark marks and pigmentation issues and regulating sebum production. It has a strong overall anti-ageing capacity and is also used in products for acne-prone skin.

B

Bakuchiol

A natural alternative to retinol that's well-tolerated and doesn't have some of the negative side effects that come with retinol use (dryness, irritation, peeling). It visibly reduces erythema (redness) and the number of active comedones. It also has a good antioxidant capacity, can even the skin tone and texture, and also reduces the appearance of fine lines.

Betaine

A modified amino acid that helps to moisturise the skin, binding water and keeping it hydrated.

Birch Sap

Sap from birchwood trees is a source of minerals, oligo-elements and sugars that promote healthy hydrated skin.

Biotin

Also known as vitamin H, biotin is a water-soluble vitamin that helps with the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and amino acids. It is thought to help improve skin health and strengthen hair and nails.

Bisabolol

Also known as vitamin H, biotin is a water-soluble vitamin that helps with the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and amino acids. It is thought to help improve skin health and strengthen hair and nails.

Vitamin B3

Niacinamide is a strong multi-functional ingredient that helps to even out skin tone and texture, reduce skin redness, regulate sebum production, reduce the appearance of pores and provides some antioxidant protection. It helps to increase ceramide synthesis in the skin and therefore improves skin moisturisation. 

Blueberry Fruit Extract

Known to contain high levels of polyphenolics, which are potent antioxidants. It also contains vitamin C in smaller amounts. It has been shown that blueberry extract is good at reducing the negative effects that occur when skin is exposed to UV and infra-red light, helping to keep skin looking and feeling healthy. It helps to complement (not replace) a broad-spectrum sunscreen.

C

Vitamin C and it's derivatives

Pure vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is notoriously unstable and oxidises quickly (it turns yellow). Therefore you get many different vitamin C derivatives that are made in order to stabilise it and give added benefits. They get converted in the skin to vitamin C and perform the same functions and are usually better tolerated by the skin, but may not be as potent. Vitamin C has strong antioxidant capacity, providing an anti-ageing effect and evens and brightens the skin tone.

Colloidal Oatmeal

Helps to soothe skin irritation and redness, which increases skin hydration and moisturisation, and also creates a protective barrier to help prevent further damage. This is due to the natural content of beta-glucan, avenanthramides, oil and proteins.

Caffeine

Caffeine is thought to help with de-puffing the eye area helping eyes to look brighter and more awake. It is said to help with stimulating and energising properties.

CBD

The non-psychoactive part of hemp has skin-soothing and antioxidant properties.

CCT, Fractionated Coconut Oil

One of the most widely used emollients. It has a medium spreading ability, is non-greasy and light in texture. It is an excellent skin softener and moisturiser and helps to smooth the skin surface. It has good skin compatibility and can help with the penetration of actives. A great ingredient, that should not be overlooked!

Cica extract

Also known as gotu kola or tiger grass ( derived from observing Tigers in Asia that would rub their wounds along this plant to help it heal). It has been shown to have excellent skin-soothing, anti-irritant, anti-redness and antioxidant properties due to its content of bioactive compounds asatic acid, asiaticoside, madecassic acid and madecassoside.

Ceramides

Human-skin identical molecules that reinforce the skin's natural lipid barrier, preventing water loss and maintaining the hydrated, soft and supple condition of the skin.

Camomile Extract

A traditonal ingredient known for its skin-soothing and calming properties. It helps to calm and moisturise irritated, dry and sensitive skin due to the content of the terpenoid alpha-bisabolol. It has also been shown to have a moderate antioxidant effect.

Charcoal

Like kaolin (clay), charcoal is a porous material that draws out dirt and sebum from the pores, decongesting the skin and thus preventing break outs.

Coconut Oil

Used as a source ingredient for a wide variety of ingredients including surfactants, emulsifiers and glycerin. In pure form, it is solid and room temperature and has a distinctive and sweet coconut aroma. It is rich in essential fatty acids, making it an excellent skin softener, moisturiser and soother, deeply nourishing and hydrating skin and hair.

Colour Correcting Pigments

Green pigments that help instantly counter-balance and neutralise skin redness for a glowing complexion.

Cucumber Extract

Known for its hydrating and skin-soothing properties, it helps to keep skin feeling refreshed.

Cucumber Seed Oil

Rich in tocopherols and phytosterols, this light silky oil provides antioxidant protection whilst soothing and moisturising the skin.

Carrot Extract

Fresh carrot cells that burst when they come into contact with the skin for a dose of beta-carotene – an antioxdant that helps fight everyday stress.

Clay

Natural clay that comes in many colours and particle sizes, primarily used for their absorbent properties – they help draw excess sebum and dirt out of the skin, helping to decongest the skin, preventing blemish formation and mattifying the skin. They can be a rich natural source of minerals, and can help promote skin health.

Camu Camu extract

Superfruit from the Amazon Rainforest that has the highest vitamin C content of any fruit for antioxidant power and skin glow.

Cherry Kernel Oil

Rich in natural antioxdiants and fatty acids for juicy and glowing skin.

Castor Seed Oil

This oil has been used in both beauty and pharmacy for years, due to its excellent skin affinity. It is a great lubricator and hydrator, and can be used as a dispersant for oils (e.g. in bath bombs to prevent oil rings around the tub). It is rich in ricinoleic acid and has a thick viscosity and imparts shine and gloss to the skin and hair.

Cocoa Butter

A lipid that is extracted from cocoa seeds, that has a delicate chocolate fragrance and helps to create a creamy, soft texture in formulations. It has been used for centuries on skin and hair and is a great moisturiser and skin softener. It is also a rich source of antioxidant polyphenols.

Cranberry Seed Oil

Cranberry seed oil can be created using waste seeds from the juicing industry. Golden in colour with a distinctive earthy smell, with a light non-greasy feeling. It is rich in tocopherols (antioxidants) and so leaves the skin feeling soft and protected.

D

DHA

Sunless tanning agent that gives a healthy bronzed appearance by reacting with the amino groups in the keratin in the skin.

E

Evening Primrose Oil

Rich in essential fatty acids, evening primrose oil is great for dry, scaly skin that needs deep moisturisation. It has good GLA (gamma linoleic acid) content used to help repair damaged skin, relieving discomfort and improving skin moisturisation. 

Vitamin E (non-skin active)

The non-skin active form of vitamin E used to provide antioxidant protection to the formulation – this won't have any effect on the skin itself.

Vitamin E (skin active form)

The skin active form of vitamin E that provides antioxidant protection, helping to prevent premature ageing. It enchances skin moisturisation and strengthens the skin barrier, leaving skin smooth and protected.

F

Ferulic Acid

A plant derived phenolic antioxidant with strong free-radical neutralising properties. Unusually, it's efficacy is boosted when it's exposed to UV light, which is usually the reverse with antioxidants. It also helps to improve the stability of vitamins C and E. Skin will appear brighter and the effects of the external environment, more protected against.

Fruit Acids

Extracts from bilberry, sugar cane, orange, lemon and sugar maple make a blend of lactic, glycolic, citric, malic, tartaric acids that help to reveal glowing healthy skin.

G

Green Tea Extract

Green tea is renowned for its well researched skin-loving benefits and antioxidant and skin soothing properties from its polyphenol content. It has also been shown to have anti-ageing properties and help with sun damaged skin.

PHA Gluconolactone

A poly-hydroxy acid (PHA) that has a larger skin structure than AHAs so is better tolerated by the skin. It has a keratolytic action so can help to break down proteins in the dead and dull outer layers of the skin, so they can be exfoliated away revealing fresh and glowing skin underneath. It is also hydrating, help to leave skin looking dewy and smooth.

Glycerin

A well-known and widely used humectant that provides excellent skin moisturisation due to its humectant (water-binding) properties. It also prevents the formulation itself from drying out.

Glycogen

A naturally derived ingredient (from corn) that's non-irritating and hypoallergenic. As a polysaccharide, it has humectant properties that help it bind with water in the skin, increasing skin hydration. It also boosts the efficacy of hyaluronic acid if used in conjunction with it, with skin hydration increased for a longer period of time. It has been shown to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and increases skin luminosity and brightness.

Glycolic Acid

An alpha-hydroxy acid that has the smallest molecular weight, so has the highest level of skin activity. Because of its potency, it can cause skin irritation in some and so it is best to build up tolerance and usage over time, starting by using lower concentrations at less frequently. At higher concentrations (5–10%) and a pH between 3–4, it has a keralytic effect; it breaks down the corneal desmosomes (bridges) between kertinised (hardened) outer layers of the skin, so that they can be exfoliated away. This removes dead and dull outer layers of the skin, revealing smoother and brighter skin. It can help with reducing the appearance of age spots, hyperpigmentation and fine lines, giving a smoother and more even complexion.

Ginseng Extract

A researced traditional herbal ingredient shown to deliver antioxdiant compounds to the skin containing a mixture of B vitamins. This helps with boosting skin hydration and improves skin tone and vitality.

Grape Seed Oil

Grapeseed oil is a by-product of the wine and juicing industry. It is a popular ingredient due to its silky, non-greasy skin feel and quick absorbtion. It is a good emollient and skin softener and is good for oilier skin types.

H

Hemp Seed Oil

A very dry feeling oil, rich in GLA (gamma linoleic acid) and omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, hemp seed oil is great for problematic skin types. It helps to calm, soothe and increase moisture without blocking pores or feeling heavy.

Hibiscus Sabdariffa Flower Extract

Tropical flower with antioxidant properties - for bright, even and glowing skin.

Hyaluronic Acid

Can bind up to 1000 times its weight in water! In other words, it functions as a humectant and holds water molecules onto the surface of your skin to keep it nice and hydrated.

Hydrolysed Hyaluronic Acid

Lower molecular weight HA with enhanced penetration properties, so it can penetrate down into the dermis to provide deep moisturisation and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and crows feet.

Hydroxycinnamic Acid

Derived from Spider Plant, this antioxidant helps to balance sebum on the skin, and improve the quality as it prevents lipid peroxidation. It also helps to reduce inflammation which can be caused by C. Acnes.

I

IPC SIG1459

A highly innovative and specialist active developed by Princeton University, that helps to reduce blemishes without irritation. Clinically trialled and compared against benzoyl peroxide, it had a stronger antiblemish, anti-inflammation properties with reduced irritation potential.

Inulin

An oligofructose derived from chicory root that has humectant and moisturising properties. It is also a prebiotic that helps to support the skins' microbiome.

J

Jojoba Oil

Unrefined jojoba oil is a rich golden colour that has the best absorption of any oils, with studies saying it reaches the corneal layer. It has excellent skin affinity and is absorbed quickly due to the structure of it being similar to the skin's sebum. It is a great emollient for all skin types.

K

Kojic Acid

A classic tyrosinase inhibitor that prevents the formation of melanin, thus preventing dark spots and hyperpigmentation. This also helps to brighten the skin tone and improve skin radiance. Kojic acid also has antioxidant properties that protect the skin from premature skin aging.

Kombucha

Fermented black tea that improves skin radiance and enhances the skin's healthy glow.

L

Liquorice Root Extract

Liquorice root extract is a widely used skin-brightening agent that inhibits tyrosine, which prevents melanin production, helping to even out the skin tone and reduce pigmentation issues. It also has antioxidant properties helping to prevent oxidative damage to the skin that may cause redness or premature ageing.

Lactic Acid

An alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) that's naturally ocurring in the body. It can be naturally derived but is typically synthetically created as it is easier to stabilise and control the odour. At lower concentrations ( <5%) it hydrates and moisturises the skin and at higher concentrations (5-10%) and a pH between 3–4, it has a keralytic effect; it breaks down the corneal desmosomes (bridges) between kertinised (hardened) outer layers of the skin, so that they can be exfoliated away. This removes dead and dull outer layers of the skin, revealing smoother and brighter skin. Lavender Oil

An unmistakable and classic fragrance oil that is known for its association with calming, soothing and relaxing.

M

Marshmallow extract

Marshmallow extract contains a mixture of polysaccharies, sterols and pectin. These can all help with increasing skin hydration and moisturisation, soothing angry skin reducing discomfort.

Meadowfoam seed oil

Meadowfoam seed oil is a pale and odourless oil that has a fairly unique fatty acid composition, rich in unsaturated fatty acids. Its composition gives it superior stability properties, and is heat and oxidation resistant. It is non greasy, absorbs easily and is good for softening and smoothing skin due to it's good vitamin E content.

Mandelic Acid

Is an AHA with a larger structure (compared to glycolic and lactic acid) which means it is absorbed into the skin more slowly. This reduces the irritation potential and thus makes it more appropriate for more sensitive skin types that may suffer from hyperpigmenation more easily. It also makes it more suitable for deeper skin tones who typically get hyperpigmentation – this helps to fade any discolouration and also prevents hyperpigmentation from happening as a reaction to using anything too harsh.

Mango Fruit Enzymes

Helps to break down and digest skin proteins on the tougher outer layer of skin, so dead and dull skin can be exfoliated away. This helps to improve skin texture and skin tone, reducing marks and blemishes.

Mushroom extract

A natural alternative to hyaluronic acid, tremella mushroom is rich in polysaccharides that bind to water and lock moisture in the skin, giving skin a smooth dewy finish. It helps to give the complexion a soft and silky feel.

N

Niacinamide

Niacinamide helps to even out skin tone and texture, reduce skin redness, regulate sebum production, reduce the appearance of pores and provide some antioxidant protection. It helps to increase ceramide synthesis in the skin and therefore improve skin moisturisation. A strong multi-functional ingredient.

Natural pressed oil from orange peel that helps give a natural juicy and fruity fragrance.

Olive Oil

Pineapple enzyme

Bromelain is an enzyme derived from pineapple that has a kerolytic effect – it helps to break down dead, dull skin cells so that they can be removed to reveal more glowy skin underneath.

Papaya Fruit Extract

Papaya contains three enzymes, papain, chymopapain and papaya-proteinase III, which all have a proteolytic effect, breaking down the bridges between dead skin cells so that dull skin can be removed and brighter newer skin below can be revealed.

Papaya Seed Oil

Rich in vitamins, minerals and fatty acids, this pale, odourless oil is easily absorbed into the skin and helps to condition and soften the skin. It also contains the enzyme papain, which can help to gently exfoliate away dead and dull skin to leave skin soft and glowing.

Pumpkin Enzyme

Fermented pumpkin enzymes give gentle exfoliation for brighter, smoother skin!

Prickly Pear Seed Oil

Also known as desert fig this thin, pale, drier feeling oil is rich in antioxidants, essential fatty acids and vitamins E and K. It absorbs quickly and helps to leave skin soft and hydrated.

Peptides

Skin active ingredients that target dark circles and dullness to leave tired aways looking bright and awake.

Provitamin B5

A skin conditioning agent that provides long lasting and deep moisture. It also has skin-soothing properties and can reduce redness and irritation.

Papain

The enzyme found in papaya, this breaks down the bridges holding together dead and dull skin cells so that they can be removed and the fresh glowy skin underneath can be revealed.

Passion Seed Oil

Also known as maracuja oil, this light non-greasy oil is an excellent skin softener and hydrator. It is often made from upcycled seeds that are waste from juice production in South America. It is great for oily and blemish-prone skin as it helps to balance and hydrate without feeling heavy or greasy.

Pentylene Glycol

Like glycerin, this humectant moisturises and conditions the skin.

Phytic Acid

Naturally occurring acid found in rice, corn, wheat, sesame and oat that has comparable exfoliating efficacy to glycolic acid, but is milder due to its larger structure. It helps to break down dead and dull skin, so it can be removed, leaving skin tone and texture smoother and more refined. It removes skin cells and trapped dirt, easing congestion and preventing breakouts. Phytic acid also helps to even and brighten skin tone, reducing the appearance of hyperpigmentation.

PGA

An anionic amino acid that is a powerful moisturiser with skin brightening properties. Helps to not only hydrate by holding 5,000 times its weight in water, but smooth and plump the skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It also provides silky calmness, soothing red and irritated skin.

Plum Extract

For juicy skin, plum extract contains a wide range of bioactive compounds for hydrating and freshening the complexion.

Peach Kernel Oil

An excellent emollient that is light and easily absorbed by the skin. It helps to calm skin and prevent dry and rough skin.

Pomegranate Extract

Juicy pomegrantate is known to help give skin a hydrated glow.

Retinol

Rice Bran Oil

An odourless, colourless carrier oil that is easy to use and a good base oil. It is mild and rich in omega 6, giving it good skin softening and moisturising properties.

Rice powder

Rice starch is an effective soft mattifying agent that also helps to make emulsions have a smooth, creamy and luxurious skin feel, without having a whitening or clogging effect on the skin.

Rose Geranium Oil

An essential oil with a heady and sweet rosy scent. Can contain antioxidant compounds.

Raspberry Ketone Glucoside

A new and innovative ingredient that not only helps to make skin brighter and more even but also helps to reduce rough and tired skin so skin is left glowing and dewy.

Resveratrol

A powerful phenolic antioxidant found in plants, most famously in grapes that protects plants from environmental stress and degradation. In the skin, it helps protect against damage from free radicals that can cause premature skin ageing. It can soothe inflammation and brightens and even the skin tone. Overall skin health and radiance is boosted.

Rosehip Oil

Odourless with a golden-red tint, rosehip seed oil is rich in vitamin C and trans-retinoic acid, a prescursor to vitamin A, making it good for problem or mature skin types. It is thought to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles and it has a dry skin feel and is quickly absorbed so is liked by people with oilier skin types.

Rosemary Extract

Rosemary extract has antioxdiant and skin calming properties due to the presence of rosmarinic acid.

Rose Water

With a fresh, floral scent rose water hydrates for dewy skin.

Shea Butter

A traditional African ingredient that has been used on the skin and hair for years. It is an excellent moisturiser, and helps to soften any rough or dry patches of skin due to its lipid and fatty acid content. It also contains a number of antioxdiants and can be helpful for sun damaged skin. It has a creamy texture and can help give a more luxurious skin feel to creams, without being overly greasy.

Soyabean Oil

Highly stable oil, naturally rich in vitamin E and amino acids. Helps to soften, smooth and condition the skin.

Sunflower Seed Oil

Whilst it might not be the most exotic sounding oil, sunflower seed oil has great skin benefits. It is rich in essential fatty acids, particularly linoleic (Omega-6) and oleic (omega-9) acids. It has a high natural content of vitamin E, so is stable from oxidation. It has moisturising, nourishing, soothing and antioxidants and is suitable for use on both face and body.  

Shiitake Mushroom Extract

Hydrating and skin conditioning, full of moisturising polysacchrides, vitamins and amino acids.

Sweet Almond Oil

Stable, easy to use and cost-effective oil. Rich in Vitamins A, B1, B2, B6 and E, it is a great all-round oil with a light non-greasy texture and is easily absorbed.

Sake

Upcycled fermented residue of sake production containing rice-derived nutrients such as amino acids, vitamins and beta-glucan.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that has a keratolytic effect on the skin. It is oil soluble and so is able to penetrate into the pores and solubilise sebum and dirt build up, decongesting pores and preventing the formation of spots. It helps to control oiliness and reduce the appearance of pores.

Serine

Serine is a naturally occurring amino acid. Amino acids are the "building blocks" needed for cells to build peptides into proteins. Amino acids will help with overall skin health including improving skin brightness, moisturisation and smoothness.

Shorea seed butter

A butter pressed from the seeds of the shorea fruit that has a good emollient profile, helping to soften and smooth the skin whilst creating a creamier formulation.

Sodium Hyaluronate/Hyaluronic Acid

Water soluble salt form of hyaluronic acid that is much easier to formulate with. Can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, helping to bind water within the skin, providing excellent moisturising properties. Higher molecular weight HA provides a film-forming effect that helps to smoothen out skin surface texture and reduces the appearance of wrinkles. Lower molecular weight HA can penetrate further down into your dermis, providing deep and long-lasting moisturisation, helping to maintain skin hydration, elasticity and smoothness.

Sodium Lactate

The salt of lactic acid, sodium lactate is a natural moisturising factor (NMF) found within the skin and it helps to keep skin moisturised and hydrated. It has excellent skin compability and is tolerated very well by the skin.

Sodium PCA

A natural moisturising factor (NMF) found in the skin. It acts as a humectant, helping to increase skin hydration and moisturisation. As it is naturally occurring in the skin, it has excellent skin compatibility and skin tolerance.

Squalane

Squalane not Squalene, as squalene is unstable and highly prone to oxidation. A clear, colourless, odourless oil that has a light silky skin feel and is absorbed by the skin quickly. It has excellent skin affinity as it mimics the structure of the skin's lipids, helping to restore the lipid bilayer and prevent water being lost from the epidermis. We source ours from a vegan source (olives) and not from Shark's as it commonly used to be.

T

Tumeric Extract

Contains the active compounds curcumin and tumerone that give antioxdiant, skin-calming and brightening properties. It can help defend against environmental damage and promote a healthier complexion.

Tea Tree Oil

An essential oil obtained from the Austrailian tea tree plant. It has been shown to have antibacterial, antibacterial, soothing and antioxidant properties as it contains a mix of skin active compounds. It should not be put directly on the skin in its pure form as some of the fragrance components can cause skin irritation, but it has been shown to have skin benefit when diluted down.

Tamarind Seed Extract

A polysaccharide extracted from tamrind seed that has been shown to have superb hydration and moisturisation effects on the skin, higher than HA. It has also been shown to reduce the appearance of fine lines and help to improve skin density.

Tranexamic Acid

Used in medicine for a while, its use and application when applied topically has begun to be fully explored. It has been shown to be an effective brightening agent, helping to treat melasma, pigmentation and scarring. It can also help with reducing skin redness and has been shown to be particularly effective in darker skin tones.

Trehalose

A disaccharide found in plants, it helps to hold moisture, even in extreme conditions- it is what gives the ressurection plant its ability to rehydrate quickly after extreme lack of water. In skin is is able to not only moisturise and hydrate, but provide care and protection so skin appears radiant and healthy.

Urea

Offers powerful skin moisturising properties, reducing dry flakey and irritated skin. In higher concentrations (above 10%) it becomes keralytic, breaking down corneal desmosomes so the top layer of the skin breaks away.

Zinc PCA

This salt of zinc, is a natural moisturising factor in the skin and so helps to keep skin moisturised as well as having excellent skin compatibility. It also helps to regulate excessive sebum production that may lead to clogged pores and spots.
